You can imagine the delight of the Project 72 team when the historic photos of the 10-day training camp in Maine included the picture of newlyweds Dave and Jan Wottle jogging together at Whittier Field. And while the two make fair "movie doubles" for the couple, they are not the Wottles. It was the author, Todd Coffin, who first associated the capped runner and apparent running companion with the newly married Wottles. The photo offered a compelling backdrop for sharing Jan Wottle's role in supporting Dave through his injuries and stoking his confidence for what turned out to be an historic gold medal run in the 800 meters.
You can imagine the dissapointment when the team learned, through a Track & Field News post, that the photo is really of 50 km race walker Bill Weigle. The lack of tall white socks, slight backward lean and tanned legs are clues - but all were subverted by the power of the hat. Dave Wottle was gracious when informed of the mistake; he is surely a champion on the track and in life. The author humbly apologizes for the error and offers below the corrected pages of the newly revised book edition.
